Move to the front and the distinct and dark external piers give the street façade a unique identity that lets it stand out from its neighboring structures. With living space that is separated from the large kitchen and dining area by a double-sided fireplace the interior uses as few partitions as possible.
Many exceptional and iconic elements of a traditional Javanese house have been brought to this beautiful urban home and reinterpreted to fit in with a more contemporary context. The classic in Javanese homes is altered by creating flatter roof forms but the design essentially remains inspired by the older homes in the region.
Creating an open living space connected with the garden was one of the key requirements of the clients and by using sliding glass doors this is accomplished with effortless ease. The high ceiling and an internal courtyard provide this space with ample natural light and pops of bright color and the garden landscape gives it a vibrant and cheerful appeal.
On the inside it is neutral hues that hold sway with shades of gray white and warm wooden accents fashioning open living spaces and cozy private quarters that feel both elegant and inviting.
Transforming the old mezzanine level into the new kitchen was accomplished by incorporating a stunning natural stone kitchen island cabinets draped in oak veneer and stainless steel worktops that complement the existing farmhouse-style stove perfectly.
Décor and accessories are kept minimal with curated wall art taking center stage in each room while a brick wall fireplace and inviting kitchen flank the light-filled central zone. With a ‘mirrored parallelogram’ design for the two levels of the house there is plenty of space for shaded terraces niches and outdoor zones that are visually connected with the interior. The ground floor houses the kitchen central living space dining area and bedrooms with the top floor holding an addition living space bathrooms and a lovely terrace.
A sculptural staircase connects the three floors with the kitchen dining area and living space being housed on the ground level and a gorgeous study and wraparound terrace on the third floor.
